Herniated Disc

A herniated disc is one of the most common disc injuries and a source of chronic back pain. Each disc is made from a jelly-like substance that is enclosed in a tougher outer shell. Spinal misalignment, slips and falls, and other incidents can damage the disc, causing a tear in the outer shell. The inner substance then spills out onto surrounding components of the spinal column. This is also known as a slipped disc.

Bulging Disc

A bulging disc is similar to a herniated disc, but it’s not quite as severe. That’s because there is no tear in the outer shell. Instead, the inner substance stays enclosed in the casing. Though there may be no pain caused by a bulging disc, it can create pressure on surrounding spinal components, leading to back pain and discomfort.

Pinched Nerves

A pinched nerve isn’t a disc injury itself but is caused by a herniated or bulging disc. Nerves can become pinched or compressed when the disc spills out or puts pressure on the nerve, leading to pain, tingling, numbness, and weakness. Sciatica is the most well-known form of a pinched nerve, creating pain, numbness, and tingling from the lower back to the foot.
